Revenge of Señor Cactus

Overview

Tools:

This project is mostly about modeling different candies. The idea for the project kind of came out of nowhere. I wanted to model a candy I was eating and started thinking about how there are so many candies with different shapes, sizes, colors and textures. After that the project just escalated into a massive bowl of different candies.

Overall, the project was fun. It had few demanding challenges but also offered lots of opportunities to experiment with Blender's shader nodes to create different candy-like materials.

Process

Modeling

Every candy started from a simple primitive that was shaped into its final form with modifiers and light sculpting. Keeping the shapes simple made it easy to fill the bucket with lots of variations.

Materials & shading

The materials were built with Blender's shader nodes — subsurface scattering for the gummy candies, glossy and slightly bumpy surfaces for the hard ones, and translucent plastic for the wrappers.

Lighting & rendering

The final images were lit with a simple studio-style setup and rendered with Cycles. Most of the time went into small tweaks to make the candy colors pop against the background.
